The Master Class: Professional Tanning Gel Application
This guide combines expert preparation with our signature Bottom-Up Technique and Fluid Blending to ensure a flawless, salon-quality tan at home.
Phase 1: Prep for Perfection
A professional tan is only as good as the canvas beneath it.
- Exfoliate: Use a sugar or salt-based scrub 24 hours before your application to create a smooth, uniform surface.
- The "Oil-Free" Rule: Avoid oil-heavy scrubs. Gel formulas are water-based and can be "blocked" by oily residues, leading to a patchy finish.
- Create a Barrier: Apply a thin layer of oil-free moisturizer to hands, feet, and dry patches (heels, knees, elbows). This prevents the gel from over-saturating these porous areas.
Phase 2: The Bottom-Up Technique
Because gel dries faster than cream, work in quick, focused sections to maintain a "wet edge" for blending.
1. The Lower Body
- The Flow: Begin at the ankles. Work in long, sweeping upward strokes rather than small circles to leverage the gel's glide.
- Distribution: Apply enough gel to feel a "slip" on the skin. If the skin feels tacky too quickly, you are using too little product.
- The Wrap: Blend from the thighs into the hips and buttocks.
- Reset: Wipe your palms with a damp cloth before moving to the mid-section.
2. The Mid-Section & Back
- The Fluid Blend: Sweep the gel from the hips upward toward the ribcage. Use broad, overlapping strokes to ensure the transition from front to back is seamless.
- Back Coverage: If using a tanning strap, apply the gel directly to the strap. Use a "sawing" (side-to-side) motion across the middle and upper back.
- Flash Dry: Gel sets quickly. Use a blow dryer on a cool setting for 30 seconds to ensure the lower half is dry before sitting or bending.
Phase 3: Upper Body & Arms
The skin on the chest and inner arms is thinner and requires a "feathering" touch.
- Chest & Shoulders: Start at the base of the bust and work toward the collarbones. Use the remaining gel on your mitt to feather upward onto the neck.
- Outer Arms: Work from the shoulder down toward the wrist. The tops of the arms can handle a more generous application as they naturally catch more sun.
- Inner Arms & Elbows: Use a very light touch. Bend your arm to apply to the elbow, then immediately buff the "point" with a dry cloth to prevent pooling.
Phase 4: Face, Hands & Feet (The Detail Work)
- The Face (The Glide): Apply a pea-sized amount to your fingertips. Blend quickly from the center of the face outward toward the hairline and jawline.
- The Hands: Shape your hand into a "claw." Use only the residue left on your mitt (or a tiny drop of gel) to sweep over the knuckles.
- The Feet: Sweep the gel over the tops of the feet, blending carefully into the ankle line.
- The Final Buff: Use a fluffy brush or dry cloth to buff the hairline and wrists immediately after application to ensure a soft transition.
The Professional Finish (Do Not Skip!)
- The "No-Fly Zone": Avoid applying gel directly to armpits. Buff the edges of the area with a dry cloth for a natural blend.
- Wrist & Ankle Buff: Use a rolled dry cloth to gently buff the transition between your wrists/hands and ankles/feet.
- The T-Pose Set: Stand in a "T-pose" and use a cool blow dryer for 60 seconds.
- Clean the Details: Thoroughly wipe your palms, nails, and cuticles one last time with a damp cloth.
