The Ultimate Self-Tanning Prep Guide for Summer

The Ultimate Self-Tanning Prep Guide for Summer

June 20th marks the official start of summer—and that means we’re showing more skin so it's glow time. Whether you’re planning beach days, wedding weekends, or just want to look like you just got back from vacation, the secret to your best-looking tan lies in one word: PREP!

At Chocolate Sun, we believe in a healthy, radiant glow powered by clean ingredients, smart habits, and mindful tanning. In this guide, we’re breaking down why proper tanning prep matters, and exactly how to get your skin tan-ready for a flawless finish—every single time.

Why Prep Matters More Than You Think

Prepping your skin isn’t just a nice-to-do. It’s the foundation for a smoother, longer-lasting, and more natural-looking tan. Here’s why:

  • Even color payoff: Dead skin cells and dry patches can make your tan cling in weird places. Exfoliating before ensures your glow goes on smoothly and evenly.
  • Longer-lasting results: A well-exfoliated, moisturized canvas holds color better, which means fewer reapplications and less fading.
  • Streak-free finish: The right prep prevents patchiness and ensures that glow is golden, not blotchy.
  • Boosted product performance: When your skin is clean, hydrated, and balanced, our organic tanning formulas can do their job better—resulting in a glow that’s natural, not “self-tanner obvious.”

The Chocolate Sun Tan-Prep Routine

1. Exfoliate  24 hours before

Slough off dead skin cells using our gentle, nourishing Body Scrubs. Pay special attention to elbows, knees, ankles, and heels—these areas tend to absorb more product.

Pro Tip: If shaving is needed, you’ll want to do that BEFORE exfoliating.

2. Hydrate days before tanning

Use a natural hydrating lotion or cream in the days before applying your self-tanner to ensure your skin is soft and ready for an even application. (DO NOT moisturize directly before tanning though!) Focus on areas that tend to be drier, such as elbows, knees, and ankles, to prevent the tan from developing uneven in those areas.

3. Skip skincare on the face

On tanning day, skip heavy skincare, which can create a barrier or cause uneven color.

4. Drink plenty of water

Hydration starts from the inside out. Make sure you're drinking enough water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and glowing.

Post-Tan Tips for a Glow That Goes the Distance:

  • Wait to shower: Allow 6–8 hours for the tan to fully develop.
  • Avoid sweating or swimming during development time.
  • Moisturize after your first shower to lock in color and extend your glow.
  • DO NOT use any scrubs or exfoliating products during the life of your tan
